$10M Walnut Hills development ready to open
The Model Group is nearly complete with a $10 million project to add 30 new apartments and 7,000 square feet of commercial space on McMillan between Gilbert Avenue and Kemper Lane. The project is among the latest attempts to add more market-rate housing and retail activity in an important neighborhood commercial corridor.
A large chunk of McMillan from Kemper to Gilbert is owned by either the city, the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation, the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority or Model Group. Neighborhood groups have already tapped MKSK to help create a plan to guide future redevelopment decisions at Peebles Corner, the Martin Luther King interchange and the southwest section of the neighborhood.
Just Q'in Barbeque Catering will open a restaurant at Trevarren this spring. Wright said Just Q'in makes sense for the site because it's a restaurant category that's in short supply in the region.
More tenants are being sought for other retail spaces and Urban Fast Forward is identifying tenants for other available spaces. Learning from what's happened with development in Over-the-Rhine, Urban Fast Forward principal Kathleen Norris said food and drink establishments can serve as a viable anchor for new developments and can bring traffic to the neighborhood.
"We're working on a neighborhood bar and we'd like to have another restaurant, maybe some retail," Norris said.
